Introduction to the NLSPMT

The Newfoundland and Labrador Standards of Practice for Mathematics Teaching (NLSPMT) provides teachers and other instructional leaders with a clear, concise, resource with which to:

  • recognize and affirm the excellent teaching and learning already occurring;
  • engage in personal reflection of their current practices;
  • identify and address professional learning needs; and,
  • inform the collaborative work of professional learning communities.

The NLSPMT seeks to promote excellence among teachers of mathematics and to recognize quality teaching at all grade levels. The Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Education (EDU) acknowledges the importance of standards to the growth of exemplary educators and is proud to provide NLSPMT-related professional learning opportunities to the province's educators through STELLAR.

The NLSPMT is developed in three (3) domains (click on a domain for more information):

The domains serve as the pillars for seven (7) standards (click on a standard for more information):

Each standard is further elaborated upon by a number of descriptors. The descriptors are numbered for ease of reference, not by order of importance nor magnitude. There are 30 descriptors in total.

A printable version of the NLSPMT is available here; recommended paper size is 11" x 17".
