Determinant Scavenger Hunt

Use this Tool to:   

 to identify and celebrate evidence of the school development determinants that already exist within your school, recognizing your strengths, making practices visible and learning from each other.

Pre-Meeting Prep:   

 

 
  •  create a scavenger hunt list (you can review your school development plan for particular items that may be tied to a specific determinant or you can take main points from one or more determiants)
  • create a padlet to capture pictures 

Suggested Timing:   

   30 - 40 minutes (adjust time as needed)

Steps:   

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

1. Review the list: In groups, or on your own, review the lists from the determinants. Consider what each determinant might "look like" in practice with your school.  
     
2.  Explore the school: (20 - 25 minutes): Individually or in groups explore your school. Look for evidence. displays, learning spces, resources, routines, programs, or practices that reflect the determiants you are looking for. It is very important to go into classrooms and spaces that you don't normally visit. Also, don't forget the spaces that may exist outside on your school grounds. Remember, it is ok to role play practices as examples too. 

  • take photos of the examples you find but remember to respect privacy (if a student name is visible on piece on a piece of work that you are highlighting perhaps you can cover the name)


3. Celebrating and Reflecting: (15 -20 minutes): Gather as a staff and view the Padlet together. As you review the collected evidence, consider the following:

  • Which determinants were easy to find evidence of?
  • Which determinants were less visible?
  • What stengths emerged across our school?
  • What opportunities do we have to make certain determinants more evident?

Additional Notes:   

 

 

 

 

 

You can also change this activity to have staff find evidence of things they would like to share about their school, or things that they are proud of around their school. You can then have them connect those items back to particular determinants. This can also be a way of dentifying determinants that may require additional work in your school.
